QUESTION:

A compound with molecular formula C8H18 exhibits a 1 H NMR spectrum with only one signal. How many signals would you expect in the 13C NMR spectrum of this compound?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

The molecular formula of the compound is \(\mathrm{C}_{8} \mathrm{H}_{18}\).

Now we have to calculate the degree of unsaturation.

Degree of unsaturation or hydrogen deficiency index (HDI):

\(\mathrm{HDI}\) of the compound can be calculated by using the following formula:

                                               \(H D I=\frac{1}{2}(2 C+2+N-H-X)\)

Here,

\(C\) is the number of carbon atoms.

\(\mathrm{N}\) is the number of nitrogen atoms.

\(\mathrm{H}\) is the number of hydrogen atoms.

\(X\) is the number of halogen atoms.
