QUESTION:

Determine the structure of an alcohol with molecular formula C6H14O that exhibits the following DEPT-135 spectrum: 70 60 50 40 30 20 10 0 Chemical Shift (ppm) DEPT 135

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 5

This exercise asks us to determine the structure of an unknown alcohol with molecular formula \(\mathrm{C}_{6} \mathrm{H}_{14} \mathrm{O}\) that exhibits the following signals \(\mathrm{m}\) its DEPT- \(135{ }^{13} \mathrm{C}\) NMR spectrum \((\mathrm{ppm})\) : negative signals at \(62,33,31,25\), and 22 ppm positive signal at 14 ppm.

Recall that in a DEPT-135 spectrum, methyl groups \(\left(\mathrm{CH}_{3}\right)\) as well as \(\mathrm{CH}\) carbons show a positive signal while a \(\mathrm{CH}_{2}\) group displays a negative signal. A carbon with no attached hydrogens doesn't show any signal in a DEPT-135 spectrum.
