Problem 88AE

Note from the following table that there is a significant increase in atomic radius upon moving from Y to La whereas the radii of Zr to Hf are the same. Suggest an explanation for this effect.

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution Step 1 As we move from Y to La there is an increase in size as expected (when we come down a group in the periodic table size always increases).Bu for Zr and Hf the size will be same due to Lanthanide contraction Step 2 The steady decrease in the size of lanthanide ions with the increase in atomic no. is called lanthanide contraction. Cause for lanthanide contraction As we move down the group from left to right in a lanthanide series, the atomic no. increases and for every proton in the nucleus the extra electron goes to 4f orbital. The 4f orbital is too diffused to shield the nucleus effectively, thus there is a gradual increase in effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer electrons. Consequently attraction of the nucleus for outermost electrons increase with the increase of atomic number, thus size decreases.
