(a)  The product is obtained from the reaction of 3-nitrobenzoyl chloride and anisole.

     

The acid chloride serves as the electrophile, but we need a strongly activated coupling partner to initiate the Friedel-Crafts reaction. We know from the description of the exercise that we’re expected to use an acyl chloride, so we can “split” the target molecule into halves: one with the nitro group / acyl chloride, and the other being the methoxy benzene.
