In the following reaction, iodine monochloride (ICl) effectively serves as a source of an electophilic iodonium species, I + (J. Org. Chem. 2005, 70, 35113517): I ICl OMe I MeO OMe A B + (a) Propose a mechanism for the formation of each of the two products, A and B. (b) The ratio of A:B in the product mixture is found to be roughly 3:1. Explain why formation of A is favored over formation of B.
