Chapter 3, Problem 3/178

(choose chapter or problem)

A \(60-\mathrm{g}\) bullet is fired horizontally with a velocity \(v_1=600 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}\) into the \(3-\mathrm{kg}\) block of soft wood initially at rest on the horizontal surface. The bullet emerges from the block with the velocity \(v_2=400 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}\), and the block is observed to slide a distance of \(2.70 \mathrm{~m}\) before coming to rest. Determine the coefficient of kinetic friction \(\mu_k\) between the block and the supporting surface.
