QUESTION:
Draw a Fischer projection for each of the following compounds: (a) d-glucose (b) d-galactose (c) d- mannose (d) d-allose
ANSWER:Step 1 of 5
The naming convention of D and L sugars relies on the chirality present at the atom furthest from the carbonyl. The determination is easiest to make if the structures are drawn or at least mentally imagined in the form of a Fischer projection.
Recall that in a Fischer projection, the carbonyl group is placed at the top and each horizontal group (the Hand OH, in these examples) are envisioned as coming towards the viewer, similar to the bolded “wedge” bonds you've encountered. Once a sugar has been placed in Fischer projection form, the orientation of the OH group on the chiral carbon furthest from the carbonyl is examined. If the OH group on that carbon is pointed towards the right, it's a D sugar. If the OH group on that carbon is pointed towards the left, it's a L sugar.
