Chapter 14, Problem 14-90E

(choose chapter or problem)

A hydroelectric power plant is being designed. The gross head from the reservoir to the tailrace is 859 ft, and the volume flow rate of water through each turbine is 189,400 gpm at 50F. There are 10 identical parallel turbines, each with an efficiency of 96.3 percent, and all other mechanical energy losses (through the penstock, etc.) are estimated to reduce the output by 3.6 percent. The generator itself has an efficiency of 93.9 percent. Estimate the electric power production from the plant in MW.
