Functions of the skin include ___________. (p. 117)

a. retarding water loss

b. body temperature regulation

c. sensory reception

d. excretion

e. all of the above

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

The skin, a part of the integumentary system, is a special organ. Its strong covering is a barrier between the human body and the external surrounding. It has two layers, the outer epidermal layer and the inner dermal layer.

One of the functions of the skin is to reduce the loss of water from the body. Maintenance of water balance is primarily a function of the stratum corneum layer of the epidermis. This layer is composed of tightly packed dead cells. However, reducing water loss is not the only function of the skin.

Another important function of the skin is thermoregulation. It controls body temperature by secreting sweat and modulating the blood flow in the dermis. When the environmental temperature rises, sweat glands release sweat to cool the body. In the other method, dermal blood vessels undergo vasodilation to liberate heat energy via the blood. However, thermoregulation is not the only function of the skin.
