Chapter 10, Problem 34

(choose chapter or problem)

Scattering experiments, in which moving particles are deflected by various forces, led to the concept of the nucleus of an atom. In 1911, the physicist Ernest Rutherford (18711937) discovered that when alpha particles are directed toward the nuclei of gold atoms, they are eventually deflected along hyperbolic paths, illustrated in the figure. If a particle gets as close as 3 units to the nucleus along a hyperbolic path with an asymptote given by y = 1 2 x, what is the equation of its path? Nucleus (3, 0) Alpha particle 1 2 y = x
