Heat transfer by radiation occurs between two

Chapter 13, Problem 13.59

(choose chapter or problem)

Heat transfer by radiation occurs between two largeparallel plates, which are maintained at temperaturesT1and T2, with T1?T2. To reduce the rate of heattransfer between the plates, it is proposed that they beseparated by a thin shield that has different emissivi-ties on opposite surfaces. In particular, one surface has the emissivity ?s?0.5, while the opposite surface hasan emissivity of 2?s.(a) How should the shield be oriented to provide thelarger reduction in heat transfer between theplates? That is, should the surface of emissivity ?sor that of emissivity 2?sbe oriented toward theplate at T1?(b) What orientation will result in the larger value ofthe shield temperature Ts?
