A major event affecting global climate is the El Nio/La Nia cycle. In this cycle, equatorial Pacific Ocean waters warm by several degrees Celsius above normal (El Nio) and then cool by several degrees Celsius below normal (La Nia). This cycle affects weather not only in North and South America, but also in places as far away as Africa. Why does a seemingly small change in ocean temperature have such a large impact on weather?
