Consider the combustion of methanol and butanol. Use the table of average bond energies

Chapter 0, Problem 7

(choose chapter or problem)

Consider the combustion of methanol and butanol. Use the table of average bond energies to answer these questions.

Methanol: \(2 \mathrm{CH}_{4} \mathrm{O}(l)+3 \mathrm{O}_{2}(g) \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{CO}_{2}(g)+4 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(l)\)

Butanol: \(\mathrm{C}_{4} \mathrm{H}_{10} \mathrm{O}(l)+6 \mathrm{O}_{2}(g) \longrightarrow 4 \mathrm{CO}_{2}(g)+5 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(l)\)

a. Calculate the net energy exchange for each reaction.

b. Compare your answers to the heat of combustion values for methanol and butanol in Lesson 103: Fuelish Choices. What did you discover?
