Unpolarized light is incident on the surface of the lens of sunglasses as in the figure. The transmission axis of the lens is oriented vertically so it allows only vertical electric field component of the light. The other components of the light is absorbed by the lens. This light coming out of the lens is polarized light. The advantage of polarized sunglasses over normal tinted sunglasses is that polarized sun glasses reduce the glare present in normal sunlight.
