Chapter 6, Problem 63

(choose chapter or problem)

The Morse potential is a good approximation for a realpotential to describe diatomic molecules. It is given byV 1r2 D11 ea1rre222 where D is the molecular dissociationenergy, and re is the equilibrium distancebetween the atoms. For small vibrations, r re is small, and V(r) can be expanded in a Taylor series to reduceto a simple harmonic potential. Find the lowest termof V(r) in this expansion and show that it is quadraticin (r re).
