Ebenezer Kissaru Period 6 Miss Kamilar Mealworms and their Selection of Food Mealworms, “Tenebrio Molitor” are the larval form of the Mealworm Beetle and are mostly used as feeder for bearded dragons, fish and chicken because of their high protein value. During this experiment, I researched on the food choice that a mealworm in a closed compartment would choose. I wanted to determine the whether the mealworms are more attracted to watered food choices or dry food and how I could link my conclusions to the general way organisms tend to choose their foods based on their background. The Independent variable in my experiment is the food. I had 4 different foods. Two dry: oatmeal, bead and two wet: lettuce and ketchup. The dependent variable is the mealworms. We wanted to answer the question, which food will the mealworms choose Will it be the dry foods or wet foods I predicted that the mealworms will choose the wet foods rather than the dry foods. My null hypothesis is the mealworms would not choose the wet foods but the dry foods. For my testing apparatus, I used a card board box with four compartments and a middle section. We placed the food on the 4 spaces between the card boards. The Tenebrio Molitor will be placed in the middle space. The mealworms, dependent variable, are placed in the centre of the 5 spaces made by closing off 4 compartments. The mealworms will wriggle and choose whatever food, independent variable, they want to choose. No lighting is used as an attraction and the whole hypothesis is based on whether they will pick the wet
