Chapter 3, Problem 3.52

(choose chapter or problem)

Figure P3.52 shows a duct for testing a centrifugal fan. Air isdrawn from the atmosphere (patm = 14.7 psia, Tatm = 70 F). The inletbox is 4 ft 2 ft. At section 1, the duct is 2.5 ft square. At section 2,the duct is circular and has a diameter of 3 ft. A water manometer inthe inlet box measures a static pressure of 2.0 in. of water. Calculatethe volume flow rate of air into the fan and the average fluid velocityat both sections 1 and 2. Assume constant density.
