QUESTION:

For centuries people have obtained qualitative and quantitativeinformation about various flow fields by observing themotion of objects or particles in a flow. For example, the speedof the current in a river can be approximated by timing how longit takes a stick to travel a certain distance. The swirling motion ofa tornado can be observed by following debris moving within thetornado funnel. Recently, various high-tech methods using lasersand minute particles seeded within the flow have been developedto measure velocity fields. Such techniques include the laser doppleranemometer (LDA), the particle image velocimeter (PIV),and others. Obtain information about new laser-based techniquesfor measuring velocity fields. Summarize your findings in a briefreport.

The swirling motion ofa tornado can be observed by following debris moving within thetornado funnel. Summarize your findings in a briefreport.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

Characterization of the flow field is very important in most combustion applications. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a non-intrusive optical technique to capture the spatial velocity distributions for a whole field simultaneously with high resolution. PIV measurements can be performed in combination with other optical measurement methods to increase the understanding of e.g. combustion phenomena and interaction between a flame and the flow field, Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) is a compliment to PIV and is used for non-intrusive, time-resolved , point measurements of local fluid velocities and their fluctuations.
