Two horizontal, infinite, parallel plates are spaced a distanceb apart. A viscous liquid

Chapter 6, Problem 6.78

(choose chapter or problem)

Two horizontal, infinite, parallel plates are spaced a distanceb apart. A viscous liquid is contained between the plates. Thebottom plate is fixed, and the upper plate moves parallel to thebottom plate with a velocity U. Because of the no-slip boundarycondition (see Video V6.12), the liquid motion is caused by theliquid being dragged along by the moving boundary. There is nopressure gradient in the direction of flow. Note that this is a socalledsimple Couette flow discussed in Section 6.9.2. (a) Startwith the NavierStokes equations and determine the velocity distributionbetween the plates. (b) Determine an expression for theflowrate passing between the plates (for a unit width). Express youranswer in terms of b and U.
