Problem 8.47

Propofol is used as a general anesthetic in the first stages of surgery. 2,6-diisopropylphenol (propofol) OH CH(CH3)2 CH(CH3)2 Propofol is insoluble in water, but it has to be administered by intravenous injection. For this reason, propofol is formulated as a mixture with soybean oil and lecithin. (This milky formulation is sometimes jokingly called milk of amnesia by anesthesiologists.) What is the purpose of these additives? (The structure of an oil is shown in Fig. P8.46.)
