Assignable cause
The portion of the variability in a set of observations that can be traced to speciic causes, such as operators, materials, or equipment. Also called a special cause.

Axioms of probability
A set of rules that probabilities deined on a sample space must follow. See Probability

Bernoulli trials
Sequences of independent trials with only two outcomes, generally called “success” and “failure,” in which the probability of success remains constant.

C chart
An attribute control chart that plots the total number of defects per unit in a subgroup. Similar to a defectsperunit or U chart.

Chisquare (or chisquared) random variable
A continuous random variable that results from the sum of squares of independent standard normal random variables. It is a special case of a gamma random variable.

Comparative experiment
An experiment in which the treatments (experimental conditions) that are to be studied are included in the experiment. The data from the experiment are used to evaluate the treatments.

Components of variance
The individual components of the total variance that are attributable to speciic sources. This usually refers to the individual variance components arising from a random or mixed model analysis of variance.

Conidence level
Another term for the conidence coeficient.

Contrast
A linear function of treatment means with coeficients that total zero. A contrast is a summary of treatment means that is of interest in an experiment.

Critical region
In hypothesis testing, this is the portion of the sample space of a test statistic that will lead to rejection of the null hypothesis.

Cumulative normal distribution function
The cumulative distribution of the standard normal distribution, often denoted as ?( ) x and tabulated in Appendix Table II.

Cumulative sum control chart (CUSUM)
A control chart in which the point plotted at time t is the sum of the measured deviations from target for all statistics up to time t

Decision interval
A parameter in a tabular CUSUM algorithm that is determined from a tradeoff between false alarms and the detection of assignable causes.

Defect
Used in statistical quality control, a defect is a particular type of nonconformance to speciications or requirements. Sometimes defects are classiied into types, such as appearance defects and functional defects.

Discrete random variable
A random variable with a inite (or countably ininite) range.

Estimator (or point estimator)
A procedure for producing an estimate of a parameter of interest. An estimator is usually a function of only sample data values, and when these data values are available, it results in an estimate of the parameter of interest.

Fraction defective
In statistical quality control, that portion of a number of units or the output of a process that is defective.

Fractional factorial experiment
A type of factorial experiment in which not all possible treatment combinations are run. This is usually done to reduce the size of an experiment with several factors.
