He can be a jerk... I was always afraid to ask questions because he makes people sound dumb. He's really clear though compared to other chemistry professors. If you understand the homework and practice tests you should be okay. Do NOT wait for the night before the test to study! I would definitely take him though. Understanding the material is the most challenging part. ...Continue reading

Chemistry is not easy, but Dr. Atwood teaches it clearly. I did not find him intimidating, though people who are pretty sensitive might. He knows what's on the tests and teaches it in an organized and knowledgeable manner, with real world applications of the content throughout. I worked to schedule him next semester, and would recommend o ...Continue reading

Great teacher, tries to make chemistry interesting and has a good sense of humor. Extremely clear and helpful. He doesn't move on in class until he knows you understand what he's talking about. Go to class because of quizzes :) He can also have a great sense of humor sometimes :) great guy :D as long as you do your homework and ask him for help then you should do fine in the class. he makes the class very enjoyable and interesting and is always willing to help students. ...Continue reading

Dr. Atwood is a very good professor in my opinion, especially compared to some other intro Chem professors according to my friends. He does like to make examples out of the people who ask stupid questions though. Overall, he's a nice guy. He is super hard, but is by far the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. He is a smart-a$$ alot, and can make you feel dumb. But, again, I enjoy his class and learn a LOT. Be sure to do the homework, do the practice tests, and it doesnt hurt to find someone else who has taken the class and get their JEXAM Password ...Continue reading

He is an incredible instructor. It's difficult to label him as hard or easy because it's really the subject matter that can be difficult. Overall, I think he explained the material pretty well, although he could have addressed student's questions a little better. he is pretty good at explaining things because he uses analogies that we can relate to(like football). make sure ur cell is on vibrate or and dont use it in class and dont read news paper or do puzzles in class. cuz that really pisses him off and he will call you out and embarress u infront of 300 kids. ...Continue reading

Amazing teacher. He does not write the tests, at least not all of it. Best way to make an A in this class is to go to all lectures, do not miss out on any clicker points that they have started. Find someone who took the class prior and work those tests and HW's (helps A LOT) from their JEXAM. Teaches from powerpoints, which are available on eLC. Teaches very clearly, and answers questions that students asked. Great professor! ...Continue reading

Good Professor he explains and answers questions. Dr. Atwood is an excellent professor and works hard towards getting freshmen prepared for the more rigorous courses. He knows his material and is helpful. I got a B out of the class and took H chem in 10th grade, so even if you didn't take AP chem you'll be fine! He is good about answering questions and gives pop quizzes in class that become bonus points on your final grade. Go to class and study hard, because this will be one of your more difficult classes that said, it is not impossible to get an A. ...Continue reading

Atwood was a great teacher, but CHEM 1211 is, under any teacher, quite challenging. He is the best teacher for Chem 1211, and I do better on the tests than my friends with other teachers. However, just by taking Atwood and attending class doesn't guarantee you a B. You have to study like crazy and go to help sessions before the exams. The tests are hard, but that's to be expected...as long as you study hard you can do pretty well in the class. Atwood is NOT approachable outside of class and is a jerk if you try and talk to him in his office! ...Continue reading

Dr. Atwood is definitely the professor to take for this course. Atwood, however, is a good teacher and he does explain the information well. Use lecture to supplement your reading outside of class, not vis versa. Do this and you'll do well. This class is all about study ...Continue reading

Dr. Atwood is not my professor however, I have attended some of his study sessions. However, I think that Atwood is the best! Thorough, clear, good personality. Lecture outline is more important than the textbook (I used the book maybe 2 times this semester) and there are 10 pop quizzes for extra credit so it helps to go to class! He is a hard-nose about cell phones. If he sees you with one, then you are out of the class for the day no exceptions. This isn't high school, so students should know better by now anyway. It is beneficial to show up every time to class. Study the outline and you will be ok. ...Continue reading

Freshman chemistry at UGA is a weed out class so it's going to be hard regardless of the teacher. He isn't that hard and he is very good one on one and is more than willing to help. While he is not the easiest, I feel like he was the best. He knows pretty much everything about chemistry. You should definitely go to lecture, bc he explains the hard concepts in many different ways so that you can understand them. He is really available outside of class for extra help- although he challenges you to think harder instead of outright explaining things. His intensity is pretty funny sometimes and that's why I like him. But he's genuinely a nice guy and wants to help students succeed. I wouldn't say he's the easiest prof though I heard Shepler's pretty good too. ...Continue reading

Chemistry is hard regardless of the teacher, but I am SO happy I took Atwood! People whine and complain about how bad the teachers are, but it is really just the subject matter. Atwood is strict and will call you out for sleeping, talking, etc.. . but he also does a good job of explaining some very complex concepts. He is an excellent chem teacher. Just make sure you pay attention in class, so that you can do the problems outside of class. The key to this class is STUDY! ...Continue reading

He's not that bad, really. Atwood knows his stuff and does explain things clearly. Just pay attention. Also, reading is a must (especially if you want an A) - this is a college level class - you won't be spoon fed. He is strict in his class so don't mess around. It's a difficult subject, but he's wiling to help you if you ask for it. Uses non-chemistry examples to help you understand things and stayed Wednesday nights until 9:00 for an extra help session. He really cares about making sure you get the material. I will most likely take his class again. ...Continue reading
