Aromatic compounds such as benzene react with alkyl chlorides in the presence of AlCl3

Chapter 7, Problem 7.63

(choose chapter or problem)

Aromatic compounds such as benzene react with alkyl chlorides in the presence of AlCl3 catalyst to yield alkylbenzenes. The reaction occurs through a carbocation intermediate, formed by reaction of the alkyl chloride with AlCl3 (R]Cl 1 AlCl3 n R1 1 AlCl4 2). How can you explain the observation that reaction of benzene with 1-chloropropane yields isopropylbenzene as the major product? + CH3CH2CH2Cl CH3 CHCH3 AlCl3
