Chapter 8, Problem 61

(choose chapter or problem)

A childs pogo stick (Fig. P8.61)stores energy in a spring with aforce constant of 2.50 3104 N/m. At position A (xA 520.100 m), the spring compressionis a maximum and thechild is momentarily at rest. Atposition B (xB 5 0), the springis relaxed and the child is movingupward. At position C, thechild is again momentarily atrest at the top of the jump. Thecombined mass of child andpogo stick is 25.0 kg. Althoughthe boy must lean forward toremain balanced, the angle is small, so lets assume thepogo stick is vertical. Also assume the boy does notbend his legs during the motion. (a) Calculate the totalenergy of the childstickEarth system, taking bothgravitational and elastic potential energies as zero forx 5 0. (b) Determine xC. (c) Calculate the speed of thechild at x 5 0. (d) Determine the value of x for whichthe kinetic energy of the system is a maximum. (e) Calculatethe childs maximum upward speed.
