Review. Why is the followingsituation impossible? An athlete tests her handstrength by having anassistant hang weightsfrom her belt as she hangsonto a horizontal barwith her hands. Whenthe weights hanging onher belt have increasedto 80% of her bodyweight, her hands canno longer support herand she drops to the floor. Frustrated at not meetingher hand-strength goal, she decides to swing on a trapeze. The trapeze consists of a bar suspended by twoparallel ropes, each of length ,, allowing performers toswing in a vertical circular arc (Fig. P8.70). The athleteholds the bar and steps off an elevated platform, startingfrom rest with the ropes at an angle ui 5 60.08 withrespect to the vertical. As she swings several times backand forth in a circular arc, she forgets her frustrationrelated to the hand-strength test. Assume the size of the performers body is small compared to the length , andair resistance is negligible.
