Chapter 16, Problem 48

(choose chapter or problem)

The ocean floor is underlain by a layer of basaltthat constitutes the crust, or uppermost layer, of theEarth in that region. Below this crust is found denserperiodotite rock that forms the Earths mantle. Theboundary between these two layers is called theMohorovicic discontinuity (Moho for short). If anexplosive charge is set off at the surface of the basalt,it generates a seismic wave that is reflected back outat the Moho. If the speed of this wave in basalt is6.50 km/s and the two-way travel time is 1.85 s, whatis the thickness of this oceanic crust?
