Submarine 2: The bow of a submarine has the shape of the half-ellipsoid formed by rotating about the x-axis the right half of the ellipse 225x2 + 900y2 = 202,500 doubly curved surface) is to be shaped from thin metal that is relatively easy to mold. The pressure hull, made of thick metal, is in the form of a cylinder (a singly curved surface) inscribed in the ellipsoid (Figure 12-3n). How should the cylinder be constructed to give it the maximum volume? How much of the heavy steel plate will be needed to form the curved walls of the cylinder?
