QUESTION: List the general characteristics of epithelium, and then describe the basic types of epithelial tissues in terms of specific characteristics and functions.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Epithelial tissues comprise closely packed cells with little extracellular matrix between them. These tissues have a high cell density with minimal intercellular space.

Epithelial cells have an apical (upper) surface facing the lumen or external environment and a basal (lower) surface in contact with the underlying connective tissue. Epithelial cells are anchored to a basement membrane, a specialized extracellular matrix that separates the epithelium from the underlying connective tissue. Epithelial tissues lack blood vessels but receive nutrients and oxygen by diffusion from underlying connective tissues. These tissues have a high regenerative capacity, allowing rapid repair and renewal.
