Chapter 42, Problem 42.48

(choose chapter or problem)

Suppose the hydrogen atom in HF (see the Bridging Problem for this chapter) is replaced by an atom of deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen with a mass of \(3.34 \times 10^{-27} \mathrm{~kg}\). The force constant is determined by the electron configuration, so it is the same as for the normal HF molecule.

(a) What is the vibrational frequency of this molecule?

(b) What wavelength of light corresponds to the energy difference between the and levels? In what region of the spectrum does this wavelength lie?
