QUESTION:

The 10-lb block has an initial velocity of 10 ft/s on the smooth plane. If a force F = (2.5t) lb, where t is in seconds, acts on the block for 3 s, determine the final velocity of the block and the distance the block travels during this time.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

The following are given by the question:

Mass of block, m = 10 lb

Force, F = (2.5t) lb

Time, t = 3 s

Initial velocity v = 10 ft/s

By using the force balance equation as

\(\begin{aligned} \sum F & =m a \\ 2.5 t & =\frac{10}{32.2} a \\ a & =8.05 t \end{aligned}\)

The acceleration is given by

\(\begin{array}{l} a=\frac{d v}{d t} \\ d v=a d t \end{array}\)
