QUESTION:

Based on periodic trends, which elements would you expect to be good oxidizing agents?

(a) potassium

(b) fluorine

(c) iron

(d) chlorine

ANSWER:

Answer :

Step 1

A good oxidising agent is a substance that is easily reduced or gain electrons .Those elements that can form anions (-ve) will serve as good oxidising agents .based on these criteria categorisation of the elements that will form good oxidising agent will be as follows:

(a) Potassium

potassium is a soft silvery-white alkali metal that oxidizes rapidly in air and reacts vigorously with water, generating sufficient heat to ignite hydrogen emitted in the reaction and burning with a lilac-colored flame

(b) Fluorine

Fluorine is too strong an oxidizing agent. Fluorine oxidizes water to oxygen (as shown in the equation below), making it impossible to carry out simple solution reactions with it.
