Chapter 10, Problem 10.41(choose chapter or problem)
Wire form springs can be made in a variety of shapes. The clip shown operates by applying a force \(F\). The wire diameter is \(d\), the length of the straight section is \(l\), and Youngs modulus is \(E\). Consider the effects of bending only, with \(d \ll R\).
(a) Use Castiglianos theorem to determine the spring rate \(k\).
(b) Determine the spring rate if the clip is made from 2-mm diameter A227 hard-drawn steel wire with \(R=6 \mathrm{~mm}\) mm and \(l=25 \mathrm{~mm}\).
(c) For part (b), estimate the value of the load \(F\), which will cause the wire to yield.
