QUESTION:

Which of the equations in Exercise are linear?

\(x_{1}-x_{2}=\sin ^{2} x_{1}+\cos ^{2} x_{2}\)

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

An equation of the form \(a_{1} x_{1}+a_{2} x_{2}+\cdots+a_{n} x_{n}=b\) with n variables is known as the general form of a linear equation, where \(a_{1}, a_{2}, \ldots, a_{n}\) are the coefficients, b is known variable and \(x_{1}, x_{2}, \ldots x_{n}\) are unknown variables.

The equation \(a_{1} x_{1}+a_{2} x_{2}+\cdots+a_{n} x_{n}=b\) is said to be linear if each term of the equation has degree 1.
