Problem 123QP

Water in a properly maintained swimming pool with a pH of 7.5 has approximately equal concentrations of HOCl(aq) and OCl–(aq).

(a) Write a balanced equation showing the acid and conjugate base in equilibrium.

(b) Describe what happens to this equilibrium when an acid, such as HCl, is added? What happens to the relative concentrations of HOCl and OCl–? What happens to the pH of the pool water?
