Problem 34E

What does the high specific heat of water have to do with convection currents in the air at the seashore?

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 34E Step 1: The specific heat capacity of water is much larger than land. So, during day time, the land will be more hotter than water due to its low specific heat capacity. So, the air near the land will be warmed and it will go up. In order maintain this “gap”, the cold air near the sea will move towards the land and it is called as “sea breeze” During night, the land will cool at faster rate than the sea. The air near the sea water will be warmed and it will go up. To fill this “gap” of air in sea, the cold air from land will move towards the sea and it is called as “land breeze”. Conclusion High specific heat capacity of water is the cause of convection air currents as sea breeze and land breeze.
