Which of the following compounds show cis-trans isomerism? Draw the cis and trans isomers of the ones that do.
(a) \(\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}=\mathrm{CHCH}_{3}\)
(b) \(\mathrm{CH}_{3}-\mathrm{C} \equiv \mathrm{C}-\mathrm{CH}_{3}\)
(c) \(\mathrm{CH}_{2}=\mathrm{C}\left(\mathrm{CH}_{3}\right)_{2}\)
(f) \(\mathrm{CH}_{3}-\mathrm{CH}=\mathrm{N}-\mathrm{CH}_{3}\)

Solution 34SP :
Step 1:
Here, we have to identify which of the compounds given exhibit cis-trans isomerism.
Cis-trans isomerism is the property of the chemical compounds having same chemical formula but functional groups of the compounds are rotated into a different orientation in three-dimensional space. Thus, it is also called as geometrical isomerism. Alkenes and cyclic compounds exhibit cis-trans isomerism. Cis-trans (geometric) isomerism exists when there is restricted rotation in a molecule and there are two non-identical groups on each doubly bonded carbon atom.
