QUESTION:

The average speed of a perfume-vapor molecule at room temperature may be about 300 m/s, but you’ll find the speed at which the scent travels across the room is much less. Why?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

There is not a free path for the perfume vapor molecules to travel across the room. The molecules take a haphazard random path, and constantly collide with nearby air molecules. So, due to these collisions, the molecules take time to reach, and it seems that speed is much less.
