QUESTION: Problem 11Q

Standing waves can be said to be due to “interference in space," whereas beats can be said to be due to "interference in time." Explain.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Standing waves;

When two or more waves having the same frequency come across, standing waves occur. In the picture above, the red and the blue waves have the same frequency and move in opposite directions. The interference of them produces the black one, which is a standing wave.  Every element of the standing wave have a certain amplitude depending on its location in space so standing waves are called interference in space.

The superposition of the two waves gives the standing wave

The ``2Asinkx`` part of the standing wave equation shows that the amplitude is the function of x. The amplitude change with x.
