Solution 54E STEP 1: There is a concept in physics named as Faraday cage or Faraday shield. It tells that, when you are closed inside a conducting material which is hollow, the external electric fields cannot affect you. When someone from the outside applies external electric field on your metal shield, the free electrons present in the metal move in such a way that the whole external electric field will get cancelled. Until the field becomes zero, the electrons move. So, at the end the electric field inside your cage you will see is zero. CASE 2: Cars are made up of metals and there the same thing happens. When the external electric field hit the outer surface of the car by the lightning, because of the faraday shielding it gets cancelled. The net electric field inside a hollow conductor is always zero for this reason. CONCLUSION: So, because the car is a type of faraday cage, it is safe to remain inside the car during lightning
