Problem 13SEQ

Distance Measurements. The techniques astronomers use to measure distances are not so different from the ones you use every day. Describe how using standard-candle measurements is similar to the way you estimate the distance to an oncoming car at night.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

We have to discuss how using a standard candle measurement to measure the distance to other stars is similar to the way we estimate the distance to an oncoming car at night.

Astronomers measure the distance to other stars in a same way we might estimate the distance to  an oncoming car at night. If the headlights of the car does not look very bright, then it’s probably far away. If it looks very bright, then it’s probably quite close.
