QUESTION:
Problem 15DQ
You throw a baseball straight up in the air so that it rises to a maximum height much greater than your height. Is the magnitude of the ball’s acceleration greater while it is being thrown or after it leaves your hand? Explain.
ANSWER:
Solution to 15DQ
The magnitude of acceleration of the ball when in the hand will be greater than the acceleration of the ball once it is released from hands.
Step1
Consider that the ball is intact in the hands. In order to throw the ball up in the air, one has to defy the gravity. Thus the person holding the ball must provide enough force to give the ball an initial velocity.
This force must be greater than the gravitational force applied to the ball.
