Chapter 2 Problem 4R

Question

Three pucks, A, B, and C, are shown sliding across ice at the noted speeds. Air and ice friction forces are negligible.

a. Rank them, from greatest to least, by the force needed to keep them moving.

b. Rank them, from greatest to least, by the force needed to stop them in the same time interval.

Solution

Step 1 of 2

a) Three pucks are sliding on ice which is a frictionless surface and the air resistance is also negligible. So, there is no opposing force. We know that a moving object will continue its motion with the same speed and same direction until an external force acts on it. Here the external forces are not present so the objects will continue with their speeds and direction without any change.

So, there is no requirement of any force to keep them moving.
