Chapter 17, Problem 17.21

(choose chapter or problem)

(II) Wine bottles are never completely filled: a small volumeof air is left in the glass bottles cylindrically shaped neck(inner diameter d = 18.5 mm) to allow for wines fairlylarge coefficient of thermal expansion. The distance Hbetween the surface of the liquid contents and the bottom ofthe cork is called the headspace height (Fig. 17-21), and istypically H = 1.5 cm for a 750-mL bottlefilled at 20 C. Due toits alcoholic content, wines coefficient ofvolume expansion isabout double that ofwater; in comparison, the thermal expansionof glass can beneglected. Estimate Hif the bottle is kept(a) at 10C, (b) at 30C.FIGURE 17-21 21.
