Astronomers use an apparent magnitude (m) scale to describeapparent brightness. It uses a logarithmic scale, where a highernumber corresponds to a less bright star. (For example, theSun has magnitude -2 7 , whereas most stars have positivemagnitudes.) On this scale, a change in apparent magnitude by+5 corresponds to a decrease in apparent brightness by afactor of 100. If Venus has an apparent magnitude of -4.4,whereas Sirius has an apparent magnitude of 1.4, which isbrighter? What is the ratio of the apparent brightness of thesetwo objects?
