Chapter 3, Problem 3.138

(choose chapter or problem)

Air is contained in a piston–cylinder assembly, initially at \(40 \mathrm{lbf} / \mathrm{in}^{2}\) and \(600^{\circ} \mathrm{R}\). The air expands in a polytropic process with n = k = 1.4 until the volume is doubled. Modeling the air as an ideal gas with constant specific heats, determine

(a) the final temperature, in \({ }^{\circ} \mathrm{R}\), and pressure, in \(\mathrm{lbf} / \mathrm{in}^{2}\), and

(b) the work and heat transfer, each in Btu per lb of air.
