Chapter 11, Problem 11.62

(choose chapter or problem)

A 1.0-m-long aluminum rod of cross-sectional area 2.0 cm2 is inserted vertically into a thermally insulated vessel containing liquid helium at 4.2 K. The rod is initially at 300 K. If half of the rod is inserted into the helium, how many liters of helium boil off in the very short time while the inserted half cools to 4.2 K? The density of liquid helium at 4.2 K is 122 kg/m3.
