Examine the labels on several appliances, such as a toaster, a television set, a lamp, a stereo system, an air conditioner, and a clock. From each label, determine the power rating of the device in watts. Check the billing statement from your electric utility company to nd the cost of electrical energy per kilowatt-hour. (Prices usually range from about a nickel to 20 cents.) Calculate the cost of running each appliance for 1 h. Estimate how many hours per day each appliance is used. Then, on the basis of your daily estimate, calculate the monthly cost of using each appliance.
