Chapter 31, Problem 73

(choose chapter or problem)

It was pointed out in Section 313 that intermolecular collisions at room temperature do not have enough energy to cause an excitation in hydrogen from the state to the state. Given that the average kinetic energy of a hydrogen atom in a high-temperature gas is (where k is Boltzmanns constant), nd the minimum temperature required for atoms to have enough thermal energy to excite electrons from the ground state to the state.
