Chapter 11, Problem 34

(choose chapter or problem)

Parabolic trough collector. In order to reduce the steady-state error of the parabolic trough collector system, a PI controller is added to the open-loop transfer function so that (Camacho, 2012)

G(s) = \(\frac{137.2 \times 10^{-6} K(s+0.01)}{s\left(s^2+0.0224 s+196 \times 10^{-6)}\right.} e^{-39 s}\)

a. Draw the new resulting Nyquist diagram when K = 1.

b. Find the range of K for closed-loop stability.

c. Use a phase margin argument to find the value of K that will yield \(\zeta\) = 0.5 damping factor.

d. Using the value found in Part a, simulate the system for a unit-step response using a computer program.
