Mercator map projection The Mercator map projection was proposed by the Flemish geographer Gerardus Mercator (15121594). The stretching factor of the Mercator map as a function of the latitude u is given by the function G1u2 = L u 0 sec x dx. Graph G, for 0 u 6 p>2.
